Randall was one of the great American minds of the 20th century, and this was his classic textbook written for Columbia's contemporary civilization course. The book does a decent job of explaining moves, so it is useful for players with either side.
However, the fact that it tries to cover everything means that it can't really cover anything in depth. As a final note, there are better books on the French, for example Play the French and Playing the French are both better than this book, in my opinion/5(11).
